THE CHRONICLE · THE SERED SPUR
The Spur Sealing
The day sixty years ago when Lord Vandahl's grandfather ordered the lower halls of the Sered Catacombs shut and the Lower Wardens sworn to silence — the official story is structural collapse; the actual story is that the heir in the deepest niche stood up.
The record in the house's ledger reads: 'Undercroft east wing, structural instability, lower access sealed by order, costs to be assessed.' No costs were assessed. The truth passed by word of mouth among the Wardens only: Grandfather Vandahl's eldest brother, laid in the deepest niche with his blade and his silver and his pride, had never had his ending closed — and after twenty years unclosed, on the night of the autumn count, the duty-warden heard footsteps on the other side of the door and ran. The Lower Wardens were established the next morning. The door has been mortared and re-mortared every season since, which is why it matters that Warden Sethri Vouls has stopped.
