Chapter 20

The Graingorged

The brood-mother of the vermin ecology that four centuries of sealed Imperium grain fed into the dark of the Sunk Granary — a bloated, moulting horror grown vast on stores no proud clerk would ever sign to open.

When the Third Clerkship sealed the cistern-vault full and forgot it, the grain did not simply rot to nothing. Something small got in — carrion-vermin, the corridor's ordinary hill-beetles, drawn to a sealed dark full of food — and for four hundred years they ate, and bred, and ate what bred, and the biggest and hungriest of them never stopped growing. The Graingorged is what that arithmetic makes: a swollen brood-mother the size of a farm-cart, her carapace split and glistening where the shell can no longer keep pace with the meat beneath it, dragging a nest of moult-shells and lesser swarmers through the flooded lower gallery. She does not hunt so much as occupy — the vault is her body's extension, and the drowned auger-wheels are the posts of her web. What she casts is not venom so much as the vault itself: a bilious cloud of sour grain-dust and spore that hangs where she throws it. She is not malevolent. She is only the largest mouth in a room that was filled, by careful men, to feed a siege that never came.
