Chapter 23

The Foreman's Last Page

A Gaunt Ledger logging-foreman's final field note from the Loggers' Cut, tucked in a crack in the main gallery — a sentence that stops mid-word and a margin note that is only a sketch.

The page is dry because it was folded and pushed into a fissure above the water line, and whoever folded it did so in a hurry. The handwriting is a trained ledger-hand up to the third-to-last line. The last word is half a word. In the margin there is a drawing: a thing with too many joints for what the adit was supposed to hold, and under it a weight in stone the foreman wrote wrong and then corrected and then crossed out entirely.
